Onome Ako

Executive Director

Onome Ako is the Executive Director of Amref Health Africa in Canada, the largest African-led international health NGO. In her role, she is responsible for leading the organization’s strategic growth and innovative programming in areas which include maternal newborn and child health, sexual reproductive health and rights, adolescent health and nutrition. Onome brings her passion for developing strategic partnerships and placing communities at the heart of solutions to their own health challenges to achieve Amref’s mandate of lasting health change in Africa.

With over 15-years’ experience in international development, Onome has led initiatives in more than 15 countries with organizations including World Vision Canada, the Commonwealth and UNESCO-Regional Bureau for Education in Africa. Onome has an MSc in Management of NGOs and Social Policy from the London School of Economics, United Kingdom. Onome is the Chair of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Partnership for Women and Children’s Health (CanWaCH), and member of the advisory committee for the Centennial College International Development program. Onome was named to the 2020 Canadian Women in Global Health list.

Graham Atkinson

Director of Programs

Graham Atkinson became Amref Health Africa’s Director of Programs in January 2019, after four years as Program Manager overseeing our Canada-Africa Initiative to Address Maternal, Newborn and Child Mortality (CAIA-MNCM) project in Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi and Tanzania.

As Director of Programs, Graham is responsible for oversight of Amref Health Africa in Canada’s full program portfolio.

Before joining Amref Health Africa in August 2014, Graham worked at Humber College’s International Development Institute as the project officer for the Sulawesi Economic Development Strategy Project based in both Canada and Indonesia.

Graham holds a post-graduate certificate in International Project Management from Humber College, and a Bachelor’s degree in International Development Studies from Dalhousie University.

Dave Callan

Director of Marketing and Fundraising

Dave joined Amref Health Africa in Canada in October 2020. He brings over twenty years of integrated marketing, adverting, product and project management experience working with organizations of all sizes in both the not-for-profit and business sectors.

He is an innovative senior marketing strategist that specializes in leading and growing market share through revenue diversification while enhancing donor loyalty and retention. Dave has also led national television, radio and digital advertising campaigns and customer service teams. He has led digital transformation strategies for many organizations, including the development and implemented multi-year projects, branding, research, public outreach and communications.

Dave is graduate of the University of Toronto, a Chartered Marketer, and a self-proclaimed life learner. He has led many high performing teams throughout his career in building brand awareness through innovative products, services and delivery.

Dave’s most recent career journey includes two years at Abilities Centre and nine years with Christian Children’s Fund of Canada (Children Believe) where he built teams and led the organizational marketing, brand revitalization, revenue diversification, social media, digital transformation and strategic innovation projects.

He also spent over ten years in the financial services industry in the direct to consumer and affinity market divisions. His efforts focused on marketing, business development, partnerships as well as product development with leading financial institutions.

Jennifer Foulds

Communications Director

Jennifer joined Amref Health Africa in Canada in February 2012, bringing more than a decade of experience in directing communications and public relations programs in the non-profit sector. Jennifer oversees Amref Health Africa in Canada’s external communications, including website, social media, newsletters and media relations.

Before joining Amref Health Africa, Jennifer was Communications and Operations Director at Environmental Defence, a national environmental group. She previously worked in international development as the Public Relations Specialist for Plan Canada. Jennifer started her career as a journalist working for CBC Radio.

Tasneem Haiderbhai

Finance Director

Tasneem Haiderbhai joined Amref Health Africa in Canada in June 2014, bringing more than a decade of financial reporting and accounting experience from energy, manufacturing and non-profit businesses.

A Certified General Accountant (CGA), Tasneem has an ability to integrate the management, financial, administrative and operating requirements of companies with efficiency and accuracy as the key components.

Liz Doyle

Donor Relations and Operations Manager

Liz Doyle joined Amref Health Africa in Canada November 2020 as the Donor Relations and Operations Manager.

Previous to her re-joining Amref Health Africa in Canada, Liz worked for the Alzheimer Society of Windsor – Essex County from October 2018 to October 2020 as the Donor Relations and Client Programs Coordinator. Liz previously worked for Amref Health Africa in Canada, where she was the Donor Relations and Operations Manager from 2006 to 2017.

Prior to her work with Amref Health Africa Liz worked for Universal Music Canada for 15 years as the Director of Electronic Media. She was responsible for the marketing and publicity of Universal Music Group’s artists/musicians on television. This included all advertising, promotional campaigns, videos, performances & interviews.

Currently, Liz manages the day-to-day operations at Amref Health Africa in Canada, including accounts receivable & payable, donor reports and donations.

Melina Kalamandeen

Program Officer

Melina Kalamandeen is a Program Officer at Amref Health Africa in Canada. As Program Officer, Melina plays a key role in overseeing, monitoring and reporting on Canada-based grants, partnerships and collaborations, including ensuring compliance with existing agreements and contracts, and also in contributing towards securing new streams of program revenue.

Melina has over six years of professional experience in international development managing and coordinating projects in Guyana, Indonesia, Kenya and Canada and has previously worked with Humber College’s International Development Institute, Seneca College International Department, the Ministry of Health in Guyana and Iwokrama International Centre for Rain Forest Conservation and Development in Guyana.

Melina holds a post-graduate certificate in International Development from Humber College, and a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management from the University of Guyana.
